So you want to find a typing job that you can do from home. The benefits of home working attract thousands of people every year to the world of what is colloquially known as tele-working or tele-commuting. However wanting a home based job and actually getting one is why you are here today so how do you go about it?

Are you looking for a job?

Firstly it is important to understand that you are actually looking for a job. Why is this important to understand? It is because many people are taken in by what seem to be too good to be true offers of work but they invariably always involve you parting with some money.

You are trying to find work and that does not involve you paying out money. If at any point during the job searching or application process you are asked for money, stop. If money is changing hands I guarantee you that you will not find work at the end of it. There are no work from home typing jobs that are genuine which require you to pay any money no matter how it is dressed up. I have seen terms such as administration fees, application fees, processing fees and memberships being used to name but a few.

You search starts with a C.V.

That's right, even though you may be applying online and working from home you still need to show your potential employer you have the skills and experience to do the job. Just because it is home based work people get the idea that they just click a button on some website and they are automatically employed.

If you haven't got a C.V. together then you should do first. It doesn't have to be anything fancy just something to show a potential employer that you can do the job. As you will be applying online you will need to convert your C.V. into PDF format so that anyone you send it to can read it. There are free programs online that can do this for you.

Finding work

The best places to find vacancies for home based work is through online recruitment agencies and job boards. Many now have specialist home working sections that just list jobs where you can work from home. Unfortunately some of the larger boards do not vet the ads that are placed and so there tends to be a lot of misleading adverts to say the least.

To avoid wasting your time always make sure you are applying to a proper job. This means search for the company online and find out is they are a proper reputable company. You can also search the online discussion forums to see if anyone else has applied to the company or has any useful information about them.

Where to find vacancies

With home typing jobs it doesn't really matter where you live so you can apply for jobs where the employer is based in another country. Over the years I have found a few sites that seem to provide a good source of home working vacancies. In no particular order there is WorkingMums.co.uk, TheHomeworkerJob.com and RemoteEmployment.com to name three.

There are many more sites and ones that are much larger however they rarely have any appropriate jobs that serve people staying at home. I have found them to be the best source for people looking to find working from home typing vacancies especially in the UK and the US.

Other sources of work

There is nothing stopping you from searching for sites directly and sending them a polite email to ask them if they have any vacancies. Many sites have their own careers section that will advertise open vacancies. Do not however send out hundreds of emails all the same. Take time to individualise your message by writing something specific about the company you are writing to.

If you have good computing and typing skills then why not apply to be a VA, that's virtual assistant. Many online businesses are run by one man (or woman) bands. They do everything themselves but eventually it gets to a point where they cannot do everything and need a helping hand. An assistant like you will do the work they no longer have time to do. Do a bit of research first by searching in your favourite search engine.

So I hope I have given you some ideas on finding a job that allows you to work from home. It is important to remember that because you will probably never probably meet your potential employer face to face the words you write are going to be the only way they can judge you. Make sure they are the right words.
