How much can you earn on Squidoo

When you first find a revenue sharing site like Hubpages or Squidoo the first thing you want to know is how much money I can earn. It is only natural to want to know the amount of money you can potentially make for creating content online.

Although Squidoo and Hubpages are not the only sites of this ilk that you could make money from they are probably the two most well known and most established. For this reason alone many people flock to these sites in the hope of using the authority they already have in the search engines to try and attract traffic and make a buck or two.

Lenses or Hubs = Web pages

Essentially Hubs and lenses are the same things, just a page you create on the internet with your content. This is usually a mixture or text and pictures but could be other media such as video.

At squidoo they refer to these pages as Lenses. So let us take a look at how much money does a Squidoo lens make? So for those in a hurry and just want a figure then the average is one dollar and seventy five cents per lens per month. Wow that is very precise. For those of you who are interested in how I came up with this figure and who may actually take action the read on.

How to make money with Squidoo or Hubpages or any website

Before I continue I need to tell you a secret. It is the secret to making money on the internet by creating web pages. The secret is that you need to treat your online venture as a business and not a hobby if you want to make any money. Think about this, have you ever seen any successful business or corporation run as a hobby? For those of you struggling right now the answer is no.

The $1.75 I mentioned earlier was based on a study I did on a cross section of Lensmasters on Squidoo. I did not choose a random section of the community but chose people who were treating their money making efforts seriously. That is not to say I just chose the most successful, the exceptions to the rule. Instead I ignored the hobbyist element, people treating this as a hobby will earn nothing.

Revenue sharing versus getting paid to write

Squidoo and all other similar sites work on a revenue sharing system. You do not get paid for the amount of work that you do. You earn money directly and indirectly through third party advertisements that you integrate into your page. If you want to get paid for your writing then you should be looking elsewhere such as finding a work from home typing job.

Revenue sharing means that you earn a percentage of the advertising revenue on your page. This varies depending on the type of advertising and the site that you are using. Squidoo has an adpool and shares revenue through third party advertisers such as Adsense and Amazon.

Why am I not earning any money?

You will probably take no comfort in the fact that you are not alone. Most people writing on Squidoo, Hubpages or any other site so not make a living. The reason for this is that you are not working hard enough or smart enough.

Imagine you made your living from selling lemonade. You may start off setting up a stall on a street corner. After a few weeks you realise that you are not making any money as there are no customers. You decide to set up several more stalls selling lemonade on more street corners but to no avail.

What are you doing wrong? Firstly do people want to buy lemonade? If they do where are these people and why are your stalls sat in locations where they will not find them. The same is true when creating webpages. You have to plan and do your research, create the best product you can and then let everybody know about your great product.

If we apply this to writing content on Squidoo or any other similar platform this is what you should be doing. I am not going into step by step specifics as you can find this information anywhere online. Instead here is a basic overview so you know what you should be doing.

Keyword Research and competition

The first thing you need to do before putting fingers to keys is to research the topic you are going to write about. There is no point writing about something that isn't potentially going to lead to a sale.

This means finding buying keywords for products and services that sell. So rather than talking about how fluffy and loving your pet cat Fluffykins is think about the products you buy for your cat, what services do you use that could be purchased online.

Once you have a list then do your keyword research and find out if anyone is actually searching for these products and services. Great, now you have a smaller list of thing people are actually looking for you now need to find out who else is also trying to sell these online. There is not much point going after heavy competition keyphrases. Instead you should focus on less competitive keywords, at least to start off with.

Write great content

I am not going to get into a debate about article length, keyword density and all the other shenanigans. I will simply tell you that you need to create useful, keyword rich and comprehensive content.

This does not equate to longer articles rank better so fill it with fluff and rambling drivel. Get to the point, be concise but be comprehensive. In short a 1,000 word article is better than a 300 word article on level playing field.

You do not need to be an expert but make sure you research what you are going to write about. Factual information is great as long as it is factual. Don't be afraid to link out to authoritative and relevant sources if they add value to what you are saying. It's what the web was made for and it is what the search engines like.

Monetizing your page

Most people do not take a proper look at their on page monetization options. Depending on your platform you will have different methods of making money through placing advertising. Make sure you look at all your options and research which methods work best for your chosen market and platform.

Having the right advertising on your page will make all the difference to your earnings. You can have the best page in the world but if it is not monetised correctly you will not reach your earnings potential.

So here are some basics. Adsense does well generally because it id contextually sensitive. This means it matches ads to your content. It also makes you lazy as you do not bother with anything else. Many people make extra money by adding Chitika without any loss of Adsense earnings. An extra 5 or 10 percent in earnings is possible

Interlinking and building backlinks

So now all the easy stuff is done it is time for the real work. This by far is the main reason many people do not earn any money. What is the point in setting up your lemonade stand if you are not going to let anyone know you are there selling lemonade?

Backlinks or inlinks whatever you like to call them are links pointing to your page on the web. They are like sign posts letting people and search engines know that you are there. They are not there to allow you to spam the hell out of any other page you can get your dirty little mitts on. Spamming will have the opposite effect to what you want to achieve.

Building links to your page needs to be done slowly and consistently over time. It need to be done naturally and effectively. This means getting links from other useful related content on the web. It can be other content that you have created or from pages created by someone else.

So lets take Squidoo as our example again. Say you have created your masterpiece on widgets. You could then create another lens on Squidoo about taking care of your widgets. Another one on why some widgets are better than others. A resource on widgets and their stats. You get the idea.

Please do not rehash the same thing over and over again. If you have written a page on how yellow lemons are do not write another one. Instead write about things that compliment lemons, alternatives and benefits.

Specifically do not rewrite articles rehashing the same content and most certainly do not use automated methods to create content such as article spinners. The internet is already full of unreadable pap and the search engine will devalue it and filter it out. You are wasting your time.

You should use interlinking and back linking together. You could interlink between you Hubpages hub and your Squidoo lens. To make things even murkier reciprocal linking is a wasted exercise so do not link from one page to another and back again unless it is really relevant.

So if you had a page on blue widgets you may want to link to your main page on widgets but you may not necessarily want to link your page on widgets to your page on blue widgets. Why? Well it may not be relevant to do so and may look like reciprocal linking to the search engines.

So what about three way links then? I don't think you are paying attention. Let me make it clearer for you. Do not try to manipulate, create links that are useful to your reader and to help the search engines discover other useful content.

I'm still confused could you clarify something for me?
